Ersel W. Pickens dies at age 75; services Monday. Ersel W. Pickens, 75, 910 E. South St., died early Friday morning at his home. Services will be at 11a.m. Monday at Pursel-Davis Chapel with the Rev. Donovan Kack in charge. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
He was born Aug 2, 1896 in Penn, MO, a son of Nathan Pickens and Mary Elizabeth Carr Pickens, and was married to Dorothy Martin in April 1953. She survives, with a son E. Wayne Pickens, of Des Moines. Also surviving are three stepchildren, Gene Martin of Mason City, Mrs. Merrill (Shirley) Price and Mrs Lyle (Marnee) Airey, both of Marshalltown. There are 11 grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, James C. Pickens in Montana and Glenn C. Pickens of Estherville. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Mr. Pickens was reared in Missouri but spent most of his adult life in Marshalltown where he was employed by the M & St L railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1962. He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, the International Association of Machinists and the Marshalltown Railway Employees Credit Union.

Ersel married Olive Mae Graham Jul 21 1916 in Pocahontas, Iowa. They had two children: Marie b. 1917 and William Arthur b. 1922. I don't know the status of this family.
Ersel's father, Nathaniel Pickens, was a brother to my great grandfather, Emanuel Rutledge Pickens.
