An 1814 graduate of Yale University, he worked as a missionary before settling in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1829. In 1831 he was named pastor of the Congregational Church, and rose to prominence in the community (even writing a history of Fall River in 1841). After a term in the Massachusetts State Senate, he was elected as a Whig to represent first Massachusetts' 9th District, then its 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1849 until his death in office in 1852. A cenotaph exists for him in Washington, DC's Congressional Cemetery. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
