James I. "Jim" Scamman, Sr., 75, of Stratham NH, passed away on December 6, 2008, in Exeter NH after a spirited, courageous, and dignified challenge to a period of declining health. Born in Exeter on December 22, 1932, the son of Irving and Marguerite (Dickson) Scamman, he was raised in Stratham NH and graduated from Portsmouth NH High School in 1950.

Jim spent his adult life in Stratham and for 14 years (1954-1968) was the proprietor of Stratham Grocery, the focal place for community discussion, good works, and political discourse. Always involved in community affairs, he was the grand host and active participant and held many public offices. Jim was the third Fire Chief (1961-1970) and lifetime member of the Volunteer Fire Dept., Selectman (1970-1984), Chairman of the Budget Committee, member of the Stratham Hill Park Assoc., Stratham Fair, and founder and long-term member of the Recreation Commission. He founded Stratham's Little League Program, and a ball field at Stratham Hill Park bears his name. In tribute to his many years of devoted public and private service to his beloved community of Stratham, the Selectman dedicated a town report to him.

For nearly 40 years he was a prominent and highly respected realtor in the Seacoast area. Jim was well known for his honesty and integrity in business affairs and in his personal life, earning many professional honors and awards including Presidency of both the Seacoast and Rockingham Boards of Realtors and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Seacoast Board in 2001.

He was devoted to his family and friends. There was no limit to his quiet and continuous generosity including time spent in worthwhile causes and material generosity to anyone he knew to be in need of assistance. Jim was a worthy citizen who was always responsive and respectful to all he met. He was a person that you could count on when you were engaged in any worthwhile endeavor.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Josephine "Jody" (Wiggin) Scamman; children James I. Scamman, Jr., of Palm Springs CA, and Debra (Scamman) Bailey and husband Gordon Bailey, and Joseph Scamman, all of Stratham; grandchildren Chelsea Bailey and Tyler Bailey of Stratham; brother Ralph Scamman, Sr., and wife Joan Scamman of Stratham; sister Patricia Shelley of Pompano Beach FL; many nephews, nieces, and cousins; and many devoted friends.
