Mrs. John W. Powell, who lived at Arlie and Wellington for approximately 60 years, died in Collingsworth General Hospital at 5:28 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 1984. She was a resident of Thomas Nursing Center.
Mrs. Powell, the former Mora Smith, was born May 29, 1901 in Little Rock, Ark., the daughter of Hayden Smith and Lena Arnn Smith.
She came to Arlie at the age of 8 and attended the school in that community. She was married to John W. Powell Aug. 20, 1919 at Arlie.
In 1927, the couple moved to Spade, where they lived until 1945, when they returned to Wellington. Mr. Powell died July 29, 1975.
Mrs. Powell was a member of First Baptist Church.
Her survivors include four sons: P.H. Powell of Pasadena, Bruce E. Powell of San Jose, Ca.; Neil H. Powell of Tulia, and Clyde W. Powell of Shamrock; two daughters, Mrs. E.G. Hammett of Kingston, Okla., and Mrs. Lonnie Whitten of Wellington.
There are 27 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Smith in 1968.
