Raised in the Bronx, he gravitated toward a career in entertainment and received his MA in Drama from Ohio University. His break came when he landed the part of the Duke of Burgundy in Orson Welles' Broadway production of "King Lear" (1956). This led to the launching of what became an extensive body of television credits which includes "Perry Mason", "Mission: Impossible" and "Mannix", among many more. Mathews most accomplished performances may perhaps be the result from his origination of the role of Harry Dalton in the Broadway production "Equus" (1974 to 1977). He died from natural causes.
