Thomas Leroy Guntrum, 65, of Shippenville, died at home surrounded by his family, on Friday morning, May 4, 2012 following a lengthy illness.
Born Dec. 8, 1946, in East Brady, Perry Township, Armstrong County, he was a son of Raymond E. Guntrum Sr. of New Bethlehem and the late Leila Kathryn Hiles Wyant, who preceded him in death in 2004.
Tom graduated from Union Joint High School in 1964.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
Tom was baptized in the Methodist church.
He was a PIAA baseball umpire, founded Northern Clarion and Forest County American Legion Baseball and served as the league president from 1989 to 2000. He was inducted into the American Legion Hall of Fame in 1999.
He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.
In Vietnam, he married Oanh Thi Le on June 30, 1967. She survives.
In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by his four children, Michael Thomas Guntrum and his wife Mary of Knox, Christopher Lee Guntrum of Knox, Lynn Danh Tarr and her husband Tom of Vowinckel and Lynda Kathryn Philips and her husband Craig of Butler; eight grandchildren, Jordan, Jessica, Gage, Megan, Brandon, Tommy, Chloe and Jadyn; two brothers, Raymie and Bryan Guntrum of New Bethlehem; and a sister, Kim Gates of Curllsville.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the William N. Rupert Mortuary, Inc., 430 Mendenhall Ave., Knox.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Gregory Passauer officiating.
The Berlin Bowser American Legion Post No. 720 of Knox will accord military honors prior to the start of the service Tuesday.
Memorial contributions may be made in the name of Thomas Leroy Guntrum to the Butler Veterans Administration, 325 New Castle Road, Butler, Pa., 16001
