Charles Henry Thayer, 87, of Battle Creek, formerly of Climax died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at Battle Creek Health System.
He was born January 5, 1915, in Cooper Township, Michigan, the son of Cyrus and Lena (Noble) Thayer. He was a graduate of Kalamazoo High School.
Mr. Thayer was previously employed by United Steel and Wire Co. and later owned the Mobil Service Station on the corner of Goguac Street and Capital Southwest. He also was a co-owner, along with his uncle Marion Noble, of the Stewart Laundry in Battle Creek. Mr. Thayer was the founder of the Blue Ribbon Laundry that was originally housed in the William's House Hotel and later built a new facility on Van Buren Street. He also owned ServiceMaster and Di-Dee Diaper Service until selling the businesses and retiring in 1974. During his retirement he continued to work for Mid Michigan Surgical Supply repairing equipment and installing wheelchair lifts in vans.
He served as a member of the Civil Air Patrol during WWII using an airplane he built himself.
Mr. Thayer was a member of the Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce, member and past president of the Battle Creek Sportsmen's Club, member of Club 27 and Eagles Aerie 299.
He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, gardening, and trap shooting.
Mr. Thayer married the former Katherine "Kay" Thompson in 1991, she survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughters, Joan (Konrad) Schiesser, Penny (Mark) Pittelkow, Bonita Worgess all of Battle Creek, stepchildren, Vic Bailey, Lynn Bailey, Paula (Keith) Swan all of Battle Creek, Jerry ( Shirley) Thompson of Land O' Lakes, Florida, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Robert Charles Thayer in 1964 and a brother, Ira Thayer.
No visitation is scheduled.
A celebration of Mr. Thayer's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 7, 2002, at the Battle Creek Sportsmen's Club followed by a 1:00 p.m. luncheon at Eagles Aerie 299.
In lieu of flowers it is suggested that memorial tributes be made to the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility or REACT/Eagles Aerie 299.
