Joseph W. McCrory was born in Page county, Iowa, Feb. 17, 1881 and died five miles south of Castana May 5, 1920 at the age of 39 years. He was married Dec. 16, 1903 to Annie Newman. He leaves a wife and five children, Zola, Rachel, Mary, William and Austin; also his mother and father Mr. and Mrs. James L. McCrory, and three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Archer, Mrs. Maude Archer and Mrs. Grace Phipps, all of near Castana, to mourn his loss.

The funeral was held in the Congregational church Friday afternoon, Rev. J.E. Jansen officiating, and he was laid to rest in Kennebec cemetery.

Letter from Austin McCrory about 1987 "Our Dad had a small 80 acre farm and he contracted masonry work, digging wells, cisterns, farming and was a pretty good musician playing violin, banjo, French horn, etc. The girls went to a country school near the home place, until our father died in 1920."
