Richard D. "Dick" Holtman, 86 years, of Fremont, NE died Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

He was born June 18, 1925 at Fontanelle, NE to Adolph and Mary (Waterman) Holtman. He grew up at Fontanelle and attended Fontanelle school thru the 10th grade and then graduated from Nickerson High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 7/25/45 to 7/9/46. After his discharge, he returned to Fontanelle and worked as a mechanic. Richard married Joanne Christensen on May 1, 1949 at Salem Lutheran Church at Fontanelle. Richard worked at the Nickerson Coop for 3 years, and then farmed near Fontanelle for 5 years. He then became the rural mail carrier at Arlington, NE from 1957 to 1989, and was the recipient of the Million Mile Safe Driving Award. He moved to Fremont, NE in 1995.

Richard was a member of Hope Lutheran Church at Fremont. He was a charter member of V.F.W. Post #7419 at Nickerson and life member of V.F.W. Post #8332 of Arlington. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #200 of Fremont; a member and past president of the Golden K. Kiwanis Club at Fremont; was active at the Fremont Friendship Center and held all offices in the Nebraska Rural Letter Carriers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne of Fremont; daughters & sons-in-law, Pamela and Phillip Mellegaard of Overland Park, KS and Michelle & Eric Hoffman of Ft. Wayne, IN; son & daughter-in-law, Steven & Kathleen Holtman of Oak Run, IL; sister, Anita Nelson of Fremont; 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Susan K. Hokamp.

A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Nye Square in Fremont. The Rev. Marvin Suhr will officiate. There is no visitation. Burial will be held at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family for a memorial yet to be established.
