Gilbert Hatfield
Birth: Jan. 27, 1855
Death: May 27, 1921

Major League Baseball Player. A native of Hoboken, New Jersey, he played in the Major Leagues for 8 seasons with 6 teams. Used mostly as a utility man, he filled in at 3rd base, short stop and 2nd base and outfield. His flexibility as a playere called him to the mound on eight different occasions, where he accumulated a 3-5 won-loss recoord. Making his debut for the Buffalo Bisons on September 24, 1885, he appeared in just eleven games near the end of the season. Signed by the New York Giants in 1887, he would appear in 62 games for them over the next three seasons. He jumped to the New York Giants of the newly formed and ill-fated Players League in 1890, where he batted .279 in 71 games that season. 1891 saw him switch leagues again, this time to the American Association and a stay with the Washington Statesmen. That year would prove to be the busiest season of his career as he appeared in a career high 134 games, bat .256 and drive in 48 runs. He also added 43 stolen bases. After a season in the minors in 1892, he came back to play 34 games with the Brooklyn Bride Grooms in 1893. After another season in the minors, he played the final 5 games of his big league career with the National League Louisville Colonels in 1895. After his career in baseball, he became a bank teller with the Hudson Trust Company. He died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 66. Over the course of his career, Gil Hatfield accrued a lifetime .248 Batting Average with 6 Home Runs and 129 RBI's in 317 league games. He also stole 81 bases.  (bio by: Frank Russo)
