WINTER, TED ALLEN, age 91, of Parrottsville, born Nov. 30, 1912, died Dec. 8, 2003. Mr. Winter, enjoyed spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly. His life revolved around farming, teaching in the public school systems and teaching Sunday school at St. James Lutheran Church. He began his teaching career in two-room classrooms at Oak Hill (Rabbit Hill) and Long Creek Schools. He taught and served as principal and coach at Parrottsville Elementary and High School for 16 years and spent the remainder of his 40 years teaching career at Cocke County High School. The students he taught became his life long friends. He taught Sunday school for 65 years and visited the sick and homebound as long as his health permitted. His stories about sports, pranks, card games, family and friends were legendary. He will be remembered for his integrity, generosity, his belief in God, his devotion to his family and friends, his competitive spirit, his dedication to hard work, and his love of baseball and other sports. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Gladys Hawk Winter; parents, John and Jettie Winter; sister, Nora Carbaugh; and brother, Fred Winter. He is survived by daughters, Sandra Harper and husband Billy Harper, Janyce Westerman; sister, Madge Brooks; grandchildren, Kathy Polen, Amy Harper, Dax and Kristin Westerman, Whitney and Tommy Winter, Niki Westerman; great grandchildren, Adam and Caleb Polen, Sydney Westerman, Dustin Winter; sisters-in-law, Louise Winter, Ruth Hawk, Margaret Hawk; brother-in-law, Henry Carbaugh; beloved friend, Ida Brown; beloved nephews and nieces, Mike, Randy and Julie, Jeff and Rhonda Winter, Bill and Sarah, David and Brenda Hawk, Fredrick and Sophie, Wayne and Arlene, David, Clayton and Brenda Carbaugh, Garry and Shirley, Richard Van and Alice Brooks, Becky and David Olmstead, Nancy and Joey O'Rear; several special great nieces and great nephews, Eric, Paige Heather, Gavin and Allison Winter, LeAnne, Ellen, John Brooks and Suzanne Petty, Stacy, Jeremy and Benjy Hawk and Weston Olmstead; and Carbaugh nieces. Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec 11 at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Moore and the Rev. Bill Benedict officiating. Mr. Winter will be taken to St. James Lutheran Church in Greene County, where his body will lie in state from 9-11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12 with a brief service at 11 a.m. prior to the graveside service at St. James Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Hawk, David Hawk, Randy Winter, Jeff Winter, Mike Winter, Garry Brooks, David Carbaugh and Junior Gregg. Honorary pallbearers will be former students and fellow teachers and basketball players, Van Brooks, Fredrick, Wayne and Clayton Carbaugh, Gray Sparks, Billy Hugh Sparks, Eunice Hamilton, Herbert Sane, Men's Bible Class, Dr. John Shaw, Dr. Charles Lindsey, Roy Ottinger, Burl Ottinger, Marty Seaton, Tommy Winter, Barry Norris and friends at Roby Center and Young at Hearts Club. The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 and Thursday, Dec. 11 at the funeral home.
