Professional Basketball Player, Coach. After attending James Madison High School in Brooklyn, he played collegiate basketball at St. John's University and while with the Red Storm under legendary coach Joe Lapchick, he was a contributor to their 1943 NIT Championship squad, as he earned the Haggerty Award for the Area's Outstanding Collegiate Player. After serving with the US Coast Guard during World War II, he joined the Rochester Royals of the National Basketball League (later Basketball Association of America 1945 to 1949) and was part of three consecutive teams which reached the NBL Finals (1946 to 1948), including the 1946 NBL Championship-winning Royals' squad. Levane went onto play one season with the Syracuse Nationals (1949-1950) of the National Basketball Association, followed by one year in the American Basketball League with the Elmira Colonels (1951-1952). He retired as a player with the Milwaukee Hawks during the 1952-1953, becoming their head coach for parts of two years (1952 to 1954). Levane served as an assistant to Vince Boryla with the New York Knicks (1954 to 1958) and succeeded him as their head coach (1958 to 1960). He guided New York to a 40 win 32 loss record and an appearance in Eastern Division Semifinals during the 1958-1958 season. After a stint as head coach of the St. Louis Hawks (1960 to 1961), he returned to the Knicks organization, where he became a longtime scout. (bio by: C.S.)
