William Fredrick "Bill" Vandewarker, 84, of Grants Pass died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens, with Ken Bern, pastor, officiating. Chapel of the Valley-L.B. Hall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Dec. 28, 1922, in Gordon, Neb., to William Vandewarker Sr. and Daisy Viola Auker.

In 1933, they moved to Grants Pass, where he attended school. From 1943 to 1945, during World War II, he served in the 5th Army Combat Engineers, primarily in Italy.

On Sept. 5, 1946, in Humboldt County, Calif., he married Josephine "Joy" Vandewalker, who died Dec. 5, 1995. They were married for 25 years before divorcing. On June 26, 1971, in Reno, he married Betty Lacy, who died April 16, 1993.

He was self-employed as a logger and also worked as a millwright for Bate's Plywood, which later became Miller-Redwood and then Fiberboard. For approximately five years, he lived in Anchorage, Nome and Naknek, Alaska, working as a heavy-equipment operator and mechanic. He then returned to Grants Pass.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Cornerstone Church. He also was a second lieutenant with the Oregon Army National Guard. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, restoring boats, traveling and constructing various things.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Kizer of Grants Pass, and Sherri Mitchell of Ironside; three stepdaughters, Billie Joy James of Grants Pass, Carolyn Hoadley of Brookings, and Marilyn Hooper of Texas; two stepsons, Ed Evans of Three Rivers, Alaska, and James Van Fossin of San Diego; a brother, Harry Vandewarker of Wolf Creek; six sisters, Ruth Meyers of Little Rock, Ark., Jean Waite and Lois Scroggins, both of Grants Pass, Helen Phoenix of Mesa, Ariz., Ermma Piper of Cottage Grove, and June Edwards of Soldotna, Alaska; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Mary E. Vandewarker, died in 1947.
