William D. LEMKE

GLOUCESTER - William D. Lemke, a longtime resident of Gloucester, Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior at home with family present, after a courageous battle with cancer on Feb. 1, 2012.

Bill was born Sept. 16, 1941, to the late George F. Lemke Jr. and Mary T. Lemke. He lived his younger years in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va., until his family later moved to Hampton. Bill attended Hampton High School and Frederick Military College. After graduation, he had a lifelong career as an independent insurance agent, operated Metro Insurance Agency in Gloucester and for several years he worked for Schwan's. Bill was a member of Providence Baptist Church and a former member of Knights of Columbus and Marine Corps League Auxiliary, Virginia Beach, Va.

Bill loved fishing, reading, spending time with his grandchildren and cooking for his family. He had a true gift for getting people together and never met a stranger. Bill enjoyed helping people in any way that he could. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Marie C. Snyder Lemke Madigan and George F. Lemke Sr.; and maternal grandparents, Agnes Kathleen Berry Tingle and William C. Tingle of Norfolk.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Cynthia Lemke; children, Michele C. Lemke Price and husband, Jeff of Kansas City, Mo., Rebecca E. Lemke of Sterling, Va., George F. Lemke III and wife, Betty of Goldsboro, N.C.; Angela M. Lemke of Gloucester, Va.; loving grandchildren, Sarah E. Price, Jacob A. Price, Cierra N. Roye, Julianna M. Roye, Kryshire K. H.
