LEO GANNON, GREEN BAY EDITOR, DIES
GREEN BAY (AP)—Leo Vincent Gannon, a Wisconsin journalist for a third of a century and former editor in chief of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, died Sunday after a long illness. He was 76.Although he skipped high school, Gannon attended college in St. Cloud, Minn., and at the University of Wisconsin, and had been honored in recent years by both schools with distinguished alumnus awards.The Minnesota native began his newspaper career in Crookston, Minn., and joined the Press-Gazette as a city hall reporter in 1922. He became city editor in 1930, managing editor in 1937, and became the paper's third editor in chief in 1954, retiring in 1966 after being named vice-president of the board of directors.He was president of the Wisconsin Associated Press Association in 1949-50, president of the Green Bay Chamber of Commerce, and founder of Scholarships Inc., a local program for aiding needy college students.
