Helen Sophia Donaldson was born August 11, 1883 in Yankton in what was then simply known as Dakota Territory. Her parents were Fred Donaldson and Hilda Christine Nyberg, both Swedish immigrants.
Helen married Robert Ferris May 10, 1906 in Yankton. They had three children all while living in Yankton. Sometime in the early 1920s the family moved to Minneapolis. Their son, Bob, described his mother as being very gentle, a good cook and always "a MOTHER". After Robert died in 1946, their oldest son, Edmund, and his wife and son moved in with Helen for a short time. After they moved out, Helen's sister Alma moved in with her. Alma was moved to a nursing home in the early 1950s and Helen moved to Canada to live with her daughter, Elinor. After Helen died January 9, 1956, she was returned to Minnesota to rest next to her husband, Robert at Lakewood Cemetery.
