His parents were Ernest Joshua Benshimol Sr and Lulu Rebecca (Sinnot) Benshimol. He attended Harvard and was a pilot in the United States Naval Reserve.
During the war he flew Curtiss SB2C Helldiver dive bombers from the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill. On June 19, 1944 he did not return from a bombing mission and was believed to have crashed into the sea. He was officially declared dead on January 19, 1946.
Benshimol received the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
Because his body was never recovered, Benshimol is also memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing on the Honolulu Memorial at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii.
