Suggested edit: John Martin Gardner, Jr., 90, of Memphis, died August 25, 2005, at Methodist-LeBonheur Germantown Hospital. Graveside services were held at 3 pm Wednesday at Hill Family Cemetery in Knox County. High Point Funeral Chapel of Memphis was in charge of arrangements.
Gardner was a descendant of the founders of Weakley County and of Martin. He served with the US Army in the Pacific during World War II and retired from the Army National Guard with the rank of Major. He was a member of Whitehaven Methodist Church where he has been a member of the Board of Stewards and superintendent of the Sunday School.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Hill Gardner and a son and daughter-in-law of New York City.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Hill Gardner, and a sister, Virginia Gardner Martin.
