Deacon Clifton Bowers, age 91, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away at home on Thursday, April 19, 2012.
He was born in South Carolina on April 14, 1921 to Deacon and Mrs. Willuck and Annie Mae Bowers and was the third of seven children: Purdy, Clyde, Getty, Glen, Willie, and Nathaniel Bowers.
As a child, he was a member of Rock Keyla Baptist Church in Ridgeland, South Carolina. Upon moving to Savannah in 1941, he joined St. James Baptist Church on Augusta Avenue. He became a member of First African Baptist Church of East Savannah in 1959 and was ordained a Deacon in 1972.
Deacon Bowers was a successful construction contractor and a passionate farmer and outdoorsman.
He married Janie Louise Baker on April 5, 1952. Born to this union were two daughters: Lynette B. Ward Bridges and Andrea B. Williams. He also raised two nieces, Marilyn Baker and Trela Michelle Baker.
Deacon Bowers leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of sixty years, Mrs. Janie B. Bowers, his two daughters, a son-in-law Dean Williams, five grandchildren: Charles Clifton Ward, Andre' Ward, Brion Ward, Janine Williams Parchment, and Levelyn Bridges, six great-grandsons, two brothers, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012 at First African Baptist Church, 402 Treat St., Savannah, GA. Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Williams, Officiating. Interment ~ Oak Grove Cemetery.
