Death: Jul. 16, 1931

Margaret Jane Newingham, daughter of Ann Elliott and John Newingham, was born on a farm near Mt. Sterling, Illinois, January 29, 1843, and died at the home of her granddaughter Mrs. J. Herschel Campbell, in Galesburg, IL, Saturday, August 15, 1931, at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 17 days.
She spent the early years of her life at the place of her birth, later moving to Augusta to make her home.
She was united in marriage to Jeptha D. Hiler, February 1, 1876. Mr. Hiler preceded her in death 33 years ago. To this union, three daughters were born, Pearl M. and Alta H. who died in their infancy, and Mrs. Minnie Steinbarger of Galesburg, Illinois.
She united with the Christian Church at Augusta many years ago under the pastorate of Rev. Slater, and lived a consistent Christian life. She was a regular attendant at the Church as long as the condition of her health permitted and as long as her eyesight permitted loved to read her Bible.
Almost five years ago she went to Galesburg, Ill., to visit her granddaughter and remained there to make her home.
As long as health and strength premitted there was nothing she enjoyed more than administering to others. She had helped to rear four generations, her stepchildren, her own family, the two grandchildren and little great grandson. She was devotedly attached to Robert Dudley Campbell, her little great-grandson and enjoyed nothing more than to read to him or tell him stories. She cared as deeply for the grandchildren and the granddaughter's husband as for her own.
Ten months ago she was stricken with paralysis from which she never fully recovered. Last Monday, Aug. 10th she suffered a stroke which rendered her unconscious from which she never rallied. She was tenderly cared for in her last illness by her daughter, granddaughter and grandson and her granddaughter's husband. All that loving hands could do to make her comfortable was done. She was one of a family of thirteen children, all of whom have preceded her in death except one brother, Sylvester Newingham of Mt. Sterling, Ill.
Besides the brother she leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Steinbarger, her granddaughter, Mrs. J. Herschel Campbell and Prosper Steinbarger, one great grandchild, Robert Dudley Campbell all of Galesburg; a nephew Herman Newingham, of Augusta and 12 nephews and nieces of Mt. Sterling, IL, besides a host of neighbors and friends.
