Randy Jay Abbott went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 12, 2012, in Grand Junction, CO. He was 59 years old.
Randy was born April 11, 1952, in New Castle, Indiana to Delbert and Velma Abbott. He was the youngest brother to Ben, Peggy, Del and Melinda. Randy spent his younger years in Indiana and Kentucky. The family moved to San Diego, CA in 1963. He graduated from Crawford High School in 1970.
He joined the United States Air Force in 1971 and was part of the 3703 Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base. Randy was a "jack of all trades" and had many interests.
In 1990, he followed his calling and channeled his compassion into nursing. During his 21 years as a nurse, he worked at many facilities in California, Alaska, and Colorado. The last 18 months were spent at Mantey Heights Rehabilitation and Care Center in Grand Junction, CO.
Along with his passion for nursing, he had a passion for stock car racing. He raced at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Olathe, CO from 1994 to 1997. He drove the # 94 for the radio station KKXK. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, and spending time with his family. Randy had a wonderful sense of humor and a gift for telling stories and jokes.
In 2003, Randy met the love of his life, Gina Marie. They spent the next nine years exploring the beautiful state of Colorado and sharing their love of nursing by caring for others.
Randy is survived by his wife, Gina Marie; two stepsons, Weedie and Kyle, of Grand Junction; his daughter, Rori (John) Bryan, of GA; sons, Drew (Jenny) Abbott, of TX, Chase Abbott, of CA, and Joel Abbott, of FL; daughter, Lacey (Daniel) Guillette, of FL; his siblings, Peggy Bowles, of CA, Del Abbott, of CA, and Melinda Chaffin, of Montrose, CO; four nieces and two nephews: Amber, Tony, Misty, Kristina, Sarah and Joshua.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather, oldest brother, Ben, and brother-in-law, Doug Chaffin.
A service will be held April 1, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Mantey Heights Rehabilitation and Care Center, 2825 Patterson Road, Grand Junction.
