Betwen 1867-1868 Elijah was th principal of Berea, OH public schools. Then onto a similar job inSeville, OH. During the summers of 1870 and 1871 he worked as a time keeper in the stone quarries in South Berea, OH for his brother Charles, Jr. In 1872 he moved to Port Crescent, MI and was principal of the schools there, where he satayed for five years. In 1877 he became the editor of the "Grindstone City Advertiser" and in 1878 he had full charge of the newspaper. He became manager and editor of the "Berea Advertiser" which he operate for 30 years until his death in 1908. In 1869 Elijahand his family left the Presbyterian church and joined the Methidist church.
