Musician. Dubbed ‘Joe Ma Rainey', he was a jazz and swing artist most fondly remembered for being the clarinetist with the final version of the Louis Armstrong's All-Stars Band. He first started playing in a balalaika ensemble, later with a US Army Air Force band during the 1940s, before settling in New York City. There he became a regular on the Dixieland scene and played with Eddie Condon, Bobby Hackett, Red Allen and Wingy Manone. During the 1950s, he was a session man for the major record labels and wrote liner notes for albums. In the early 1960s, he formed the Dixieland-oriented band The Village Stompers, recorded for Epic Records and released the classic instrumental hit "Washington Square" (1963), which reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. They also had hits to include "Midnight in Moscow" (1963), "Blue Grass" (1964), "Sweet Water Bay" (1965) and toured Japan. In 1967, he joined Louis Armstrong's All Stars providing just the kind of elegant style Armstrong required and performed with Armstrong until his death in 1971. In 1975, he joined Roy Eldridge's the World's Greatest Jazz Band, which toured and performed at all the major international jazz festivals. In his later years he established a career as a well-respected soloist making some fine records with Marty Grosz, Dick Wellstood and the Lawson-Haggart Band. He was also an enthusiastic vocalist and played both soprano and tenor saxophone. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
