Patricia D. Berry Gardner, 61, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., died Nov. 21, 2008, at home, following a short illness.

Born Jan. 27, 1947, on Backus Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Earl Berry and Marie Gilkerson Berry Hunt. She also was preceded in death by a special nephew, Kevin Hunt; a brother-in-law, Michael Hunt; and loving in-laws, Jim and Virginia Gardner.

Pat was a homemaker for the past eight years and was of the Pentecostal Faith.

Surviving: her devoted husband of 33 years, James Gardner of Smith Mountain Lake; a stepfather, Michael Hunt Sr. of Florida; brothers, Earl Keaton Berry and wife, Edna, and Justice Berry and wife, Martha, all of Backus Mountain; sisters, Joyce Goins and husband, Norman, of Alto, N.J., Brenda Hunt of Backus Mountain, and Pamela McCants and husband, Danny, of Glade Springs; a stepsister, Joann Gardner of Prosperity; a stepbrother, Junior Berry of Delaware; brother-in-law, Andrew Gardner and wife, Tracy, of Crawley; a sister-in-law, Diana and husband Mark Oxley of Crab Orchard; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Services were Nov. 25 at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Lewis Cales officiating. Burial followed at the Goddard Cemetery on Backus Mountain.

It was a beautiful spring day here today and I know if you were here you would be checking out your flower beds and working in the yard. You always loved the beauty of spring. I miss you so much and just wish that you did not have to leave us so soon.
