Lettice "Lettis" Hammond Hayden
Birth: Apr. 14, 1740
Scituate
Plymouth County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Nov. 11, 1805
Scituate
Plymouth County
Massachusetts, USA

Lettice/Lettis (Hammond) Hayden, widow of Joseph Hayden, died November 11, 1805 as recorded in Vital Records Of Scituate Massachusetts, Vol. Two - Deaths. A daughter of Joseph Hammond and Thankful (Damon) Hammond of Scituate Massachusetts where Lettice was born.

Her father is mentioned as a son of Jedediah Hammond and Elizabeth (Parker) Hammond in the "silver book" of Mayflower Families Through Five Generations about Francis Cooke on page 313 - 1999 version. Thus she is a direct descendant of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower. She also is a direct descendant of Richard Warren of the Mayflower. John Cooke son of Francis Cooke married Sarah Warren daughter of Richard Warren. Page 38 of the Francis Cooke "silver" book.

Lettice and Joseph Hayden Jr. were married 24 November, 1756. Intention to marry was made on 23 October, 1756. Source: Vital Records Of Scituate Massachusetts To The Year 1850, Vol. 2 Marriages - Page 137. Also church records from First Parish Church, Scituate and Reverend Lothrop's records.

Her husband Joseph was a sailor. He enlisted as a sailor in the Revolutionary War and was stationed in Roxbury Massachusetts where he died at the age of fifty. (From Roland Hammond's book on the Hammond family, page seventy-seven.

Thankful (Hammond) Baley/Bailey, a sister of Lettice, is also buried in Union cemetery. Findagrave Memorial page 100506868.

Her birth, marriage and death records are under the various spellings of Lettice, Lettes, and Lettis.
Sources: Vital Records of Scituate Massachusetts to the Year 1850, Vol 2, Deaths - page 396 with spelling of (Lettice) & Vol. 1, page 169 Births (Lettice/Lettes); Old Cemeteries Of Southeastern Massachusetts, Compilation of Records By Charles M. Thatcher in the Late 1880s with spelling of (Lettis).

Note: I believe the older part of the cemetery is at the front where the gate is. (Picture on this Memorial page) People buried in the early 1800's.

Roland Hammond's book on the Hammond Family does not have sources of proof to prove that his records are correct. It is a good source to lead one to get primary sources of proof with the correct dates such as "The Vital Records Of Scituate Massachusetts To The Year 1850 Vol 1 - Births and Vol. 2 Marriages and Deaths. Case in point is that Roland Hammond lists Lettice as dying in 1803 when the town of Scituate vital records say she died 11 November 1805.

The "Silver books" on descendants of the Mayflower passengers does list sources of proof for the dates listed in their books.
