Alexander Obolensky
Birth: Feb. 17, 1916
Death: Mar. 29, 1940

Anglo-Russian sportsman and pilot. His Highness Prince Alexander Obolensky was born in St. Petersburg, the son of Prince Serge Obolensky and his wife, Princess Luba (nee Narischkine). The year after his birth, the Russian Revolution broke out and the family fled to England, settling in Muswell Hill in North London. Prince Alexander studied at Oxford University, where he played Rugby football and gained a "Blue," and went on to play for Leicester and England. He represented his adopted country four times, and is still remembered for scoring two tries in the 1936 game against New Zealand which England won 13-0, their first ever victory against the All Blacks. When the Second World War broke out, the Prince joined 54 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. Unfortunately, the following March, he was killed whilst piloting a Hurricane Mark One at Martlesham Heath, about five miles East of Ipswich. The glass-fronted restaurant in the East Stand at Twickenham Rugby Ground has been named "Obolensky's" in his honour. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
