http://www.mdch.state.mi.us/gendisx/scripts/individual.asp?UniqueID=242667 Note his death record was filed late - 28 May 1872.
NOTE: Avery Martin Phelps died in Charleston Township, Kalamazoo, MI. Close to Galesburg. Also, he and the Chadwicks had property spread across three twps - Comstock, Charleston, and Galesburg. Need to find land records/plats.
A volunteer confirmed that there was no mention of Avery Martin Phelps in Oak Grove Cemetery. He checked the area where the Chadwicks were buried. No luck. I've asked about Riverside Cemetery and Old City Cemetery. Nothing.
NEED TO check the plots where the Williams were buried. (keep an eye out for Edward Payson Chadwick)
I am pretty sure it has - most likely - to be at Oak Grove Cemetery. Why?
1) He died in this area.
2) This is where family relatives lived and some were buried here. All other relatives moved out of state and were buried elsewhere.
Relatives buried at Oak Grove Cemetery:
1. Avery's wife's sister HELEN TROWBRIDGE CHADWICK and her husband EDWARD CHADWICK and daughter ELLA FRANCES CHADWICK ANNES are all buried here.
2. Avery's daughter Frances Annette Phelps William's father in law JOHN W WILLIAMS and many other William relatives were buried here as well.
3. Avery's son EDWARD P. PHELPS was accidently killed in an hunting accident while he was a student at Kalamazoo College during Christmas break. He is believed to be buried here as well.
The Chadwicks and Williams and Phelpses and some other families from Wayne County, NY all migrated together to Galesburg area.
We do know Avery and his son Edward Phelps are buried somewhere in this area. We just are not sure exactly where. Maybe the cemetery (or the stone itself) no longer exists or is forgotten...or not recorded...???)
Will edit as I learn more.
Parents: Gen. Martin PHELPS & Laura JOHNSON
1. m. Catherine Frances GALUSHA, often called "Fannie", on 3 Sep 1846 in Preble, Cortland Co., New York. They had 4 children:
i. Laura Matilda "Dolly" "Daisie" PHELPS Willett
ii. Frances Annette "Fanny" "Fannie" PHELPS Williams
iii. Edward PAYSON "Eddie" PHELPS - was a college student at Kalamazoo College, killed in a hunting accident.
iv. Herbert Galusha "Hubert" "Hub" PHELPS
2. m. Lydia Antoinette TROWBRIDGE on 16 Oct 1865 in Preble, Cortland Co., New York. They had one son:
Frederick Martin PHELPS
Avery Martin PHELPS was the son of Martin PHELPS and Laura JOHNSON. He married first to Catherine Frances GALUSHA and had 4 children together. After she died in Preble, Cortland, New York, he married Lydia Antoinette TROWBRIDGE and had one son with her, named Frederick Martin PHELPS, born in Preble. The whole Phelps family soon moved to Newark, Arcadia, Wayne, NY to be near Lydia's parents who were already residing there (prior to 1850).
Lydia's sister Helen TROWBRIDGE Chadwick and her husband Edward CHADWICK moved to Galesburg, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Soon Avery and Lydia Antoinette, along with his four older children (almost grown up) and young son followed them to Michigan and settled there to be near the Chadwick family. Avery unfortunately got sick with "bulious fever" one or two years later and died.
Lydia Antoinette TROWBRIDGE Phelps and her young child Frederick Martin PHELPS moved back to Newark, Arcadia Town, Wayne Co., NY where she cared for her parents while his older children were farmed out to other family members in Charleston area (ie., with Chadwicks).
Avery's son Edward Parsons/Payson PHELPS was killed in a hunting accident (the gun went off accidently). He was a college student at the time (at Kalamazoo College). He died in Comstock and most likely is buried in this township or nearby.
