| Birth: | Mar. 11, 1923 Hazlehurst Copiah County Mississippi, USA | | Death: | Jan. 25, 2012 Chapel Hill (Orange County) Orange County North Carolina, USA | Elizabeth (Thweatt) Anania passed into peace on Friday, January 25, 2012, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Noted for her intelligence and her beauty, 'Liz' was born in Hazelhurst, Mississippi on March 11, 1923, to Troy N. Thweatt and Mary Holladay. Her father was a Navy pilot, licensed by Orville Wright. After marrying Vince Anania (USNA, 1945) the joyous couple began a Navy life of globe-trotting and family-raising. In Japan throughout the 50's and 60's, Liz became well-known for her immersion in Japanese language and culture. She owned and operated a small antiques store, The Red Door, which she stocked on her regular, solo trips to isolated villages and temples throughout Japan and Okinawa, some so remote as to have been rarely ever visited by Westerners. She also became expert in Ikebana, the art of flower arranging.
When her husband retired from the Navy after serving as Naval Attache to N.A.T.O in Naples, Italy, the couple settled in Chapel Hill, where, inspired by her love of books, she obtained at MA in Library Science from the University of North Carolina. The couple spent the remainder of their days traveling, especially to Mediterranean countries.
Liz was pre-deceased by her grandson Wade Edwards, her husband Vince, her daughter Elizabeth (Anania) Edwards, and her brother, Troy Thweatt. She is survived by her sister Nancy (Thweatt) Brown of Pensacola, FL; her daughter Nancy Thweatt Anania of Bradenton, FL; and her son Jay Anania, of New York CIty. She also leaves behind 7 loving grandchildren, and 4 adoring great-grandchildren. "She will hang the night with stars so that I may walk abroad in the darkness without stumbling..."
