Admiral of the Royal Italian Navy. A explorer and mountaineer. Born Luigi Amedeo Giuseppe Maria Ferdinando Francesco of Savoy. He was the third son of Amedeo Ferdinand Maria of Savoy, King of Spain, and Maria Vittoria dal Pozzo della Cisterna. He is otherwise known as "Il Principe Esloratore". In 1879, at the age of 6 years, started his military career in the Navy with the rank of cabin boy. In 1884 he became active student of the Royal Naval Academy of Livorno and embarked on board the frigate "Vittorio Emanuele". Between 1894 and 1897 he accomplished the around the world with the ship "Cristoforo Colombo". After the ascent of Mount St. Elias in Alaska, in 1897, he was promoted to naval lieutenant. Between 1899 and 1900 he organized an expedition to the North Pole, with which on 25 aprile1900, reaches the arctic maximum latitude of 86 ° 33 '49 ", and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander. Between 1902 and 1904 he tackles for the second time, the circumnavigation of the globe. In 1906, he explores the major peaks of the Ruwenzori, giving it the names of "Margherita", "Umberto" and "Cassandra". In 1909 he participated in the expedition to Pakistan, on the Karakoram massif, towards the summit of K2. At the outbreak of the First World War, he became commander of Forze Navali Riunite, he distinguished himself, in organizing the evacuation of 185,000 displaced civilians and Serb soldiers from the coast of Yugoslavia. He started a large land reclamation operation in Somalia, along the river valley Uebi Shabelle and in 1928, during his last exploration, he discovered the sources of this river. He died in the village "Duca degli Abruzzi" in Somalia. He was buried on the banks of the Shabelle river, according to his last will. (bio by: Ruggero)
