Robert Isaac Bosman was born June 15, 1857 in Baltimore, MD to the parents of Isaac Henry Bosman, a ship captain, and Annie H. Skillman ('H' is thought to be 'Hannah'). Robert Isaac was named for his paternal and maternal grandfathers. Robert's paternal grandparents were Isaac Bozman, an immigrant from Holland who settled in Somerset, MD and Mary Dorsey of Somerset County, Princess Anne, MD. Robert's maternal grandparents were Robert J. Skillman of Baltimore, MD and Naomi Sophia Miller from somewhere in Maryland. Robert Isaac Bosman was in business in Norfolk, VA with Mr. John Lohman. Their company, Bosman & Lohman Co. with the registered trademark "NUT-LET" manufactured After Dinner Brand Salted Nuts, Net-Let Peanut Butter, Peanut Bars, Peanut Candy Specialties, & New Process Blanched Spanish and Virginia Peanuts. The Bosman & Lohman Co. (Trademark B&L) factory was where the American staple, peanut butter, was first manufactured and marketed commercially in the U.S. under the registered trademark, NUT-LET. The Bosman & Lohman Co. was located at Granby St. Extended & Norfolk & Western Railway terminal in Norfolk, VA. There is a story told to me by my father Robert Bosman Pool Sr., that at some point around WWI, representatives of the U.S. Govt. visited him, and explained that he would have to run his business according to their rules, and he rejected this and shut the factory down rather than comply. Another Bosman cousin mentioned that he thought it was eventually liquidated because he refused to let in unions. The company was liquidated in 1924. Robert Isaac Bosman married Annie Irene Snyder on Dec. 21, 1882 in Norfolk, VA. The 1888 Norfolk, VA Directory lists his residence as being at "441 Queen," and that he was employed or in partnership at "W.J. Dilworth & county," their business being "wholesale grocers." It would appear that he was in business with William J. Dilworth, and John J. Burke. The address of this business was listed (from 1888 through 1890) as "47 Roanoke Ave." However, the 1889 through 1890 Directories lists him at a new residence: 441 Brambleton Ave. It appears as of the 1890 Directory, that he has moved up in the business, as he is listed as a "supt." or superintendant. The couple had seven children: Naomi Skillman Bosman, Roschelle Fraetas (Rose) Bosman, Irene May Bosman, Isaac Henry (Harry) Bosman, Anne Bosman, Ruth Bosman, and Rena Bosman. The 1909 "Norfolk and Berkley City Directory" lists Robert's residence at 276 Bute St. Also living there at the time were his children Harry, Irene, and Naomi. They moved to their last residence in 1912 to 1138 Hanover Ave. in Norfolk, this house as of this writing is still standing. The family had maids, cooks, a butler and chauffeur. Robert Issac Bosman died on October 24, 1926 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk. The local newspaper death notice states, "Funeral services were conducted for Mr. Bosman yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the residence, 1138 Hanover Ave., Larchmont, the Rev. J.T. Allen, pastor of Larchmont M. E. Church, and the Rev. Sparks W. Melton, D. D., pastor of Freemason Street Baptist Church, officiating. There was a large attendance and many floral offerings: the casket was covered with a pall of roses, Easter lilies and ferns. Delegations were present from the Masonic Fraternity, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows." Annie Irene Snyder Bosman died Feb. 14th., 1954 and is buried beside Robert.
