Phillip E. Atkins, Sr. was born on June 14, 1921 and entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 15, 2012. He was born to the late Jasper and Marylou Atkins in Emporia, VA where he attended school. He accepted Christ at an early age and truly loved God.
Phil, as he was so fondly called, was a very hard worker. He began his career as a Stevedore, employed by the Long Shoreman Association Hampton Roads and he retired after 41 years of service. He was a former Deacon at Rising Star Baptist Church, Emporia, VA, New Bethel Baptist Church, Yorktown, VA, and Shiloh Baptist Church, Yorktown, VA.
Phil was well known for his farming skills; he farmed many acres in and outside the Hampton Roads area. In his earlier years he always kept a large garden of fresh fruit and vegetables that fed his family and friends in the community; he loved it!
He fought a good fight and will be missed by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jasper and Marylou Atkins; his first wife, Laura Garrow Atkins; brothers, James, Pete, Moses and Arthur Atkins; sisters, Anne Green, Alma Green, Gaither Green, Mary Helen Vaughan, and Emily Atkins; and his adopted son, Michael Carrington.
His blessed memories will always be cherished by his loving wife of 28 years, Virginia Banks Atkins. Their union was one of devotion and dedication to each other. In his later years, Virginia devoted her life as a primary caretaker for her loving husband and God gave her the strength to take care of him until he was called home.
Also left to cherish his precious memories are daughters, Barbara Batts and Gloria Boyd, Nashville, TN, Lorraine Atkins and Maxine Atkins, Hampton, VA and Jacque Shields and husband, Robert, Yorktown, VA; sons, Phillip, Jr., Yorktown, VA and Ronald Atkins, Hampton, VA; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Thomas Atkins and wife Dorothy; sister, Virginia Banks; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends; devoted neighbor and friend, Martha Smith, who spent countless hours with Phil; Judy Johnson, CNA at Bon Secours Hospice; and all the hospice staff.
We, the family of Phillip E. Atkins, Sr., wish to extend sincere appreciation and thanks for all expressions of sympathy rendered during our hours of bereavement. We ask for your continued prayers as we go forth in Jesus' name.
