He introduced the electric guitar to the English music scene during the 1950s and with his instructional manual "Play in a Day" (1957), he influenced a generation of rock musicians, among them The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and Brian May. Born Herbert Maurice Weedon, his father was a subway driver who also was a part time musician, Bert received his first guitar at the age of twelve and became trained in classical music. This would enable him to play a wide variety of genres including big band and Spanish flamenco among others. In 1959, he scored a Top-Ten hit on the UK Charts with "Guitar Boogie Shuffle". Weedon went on to provide musical contributions to such singing greats as Judy Garland, Nat 'King' Cole and Frank Sinatra, to name a few. In 2001, he was honored with the Order of British Empire for his body of work. (bio by: C.S.)
