She graduated from Hampton High School in 1958 and St. Leo College in 1986 with a degree in Business Administration. She worked for Civil Service as a Computer Analyst/Specialist for many years at Ft. Monroe and Ft. Eustis. After retiring from Civil Service, she worked at Saclant, NATO until retiring so she could concentrate on her health and spend more time with family.
Retta was always ready to lend a helping hand and had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed traveling as well as, her many family ski trips to Massanutten and family vacations at her beach house in the Outer Banks.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Lawrence; and father and mother, Richard G. Smith and Margaret Smith. Surviving members of her family include her children; Ronda L. Williams and husband Anthony W. Williams, James G. Lawrence, and Garrick L. Silvers; step-sisters, Mary Lee Bassett and Katie Poole; beloved pets, Angel and Mallory; as well as many extended family members and wonderful friends at Colonial Harbor.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Retta's life will be held Thursday, March 15, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.
