| Birth: | Oct. 27, 1844 Gothenburg Vastra Gotalands Lan, Sweden | | Death: | Feb. 20, 1916 Stockholm Stockholms Lan, Sweden |  Nobel Prize Recipient. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, he was a journalist, pacifist and proponent of Scandinavian unity. He was a liberal in theology, familiar with the humanistic tenets of religious movements originating in the 19th Century in Great Britain and the United States. With his liberal political philosophy, principle of democracy and individualism, he was elected a member of the Swedish Parliament, serving (1882-87). He also was the founder and first president of the Swedish Peace Association. In 1908, he was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with colleague Fredrik Bajer for their Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society the world's largest peace organization. He also wrote polemical fiction books, putting his pacifist message into novelistic and dramatist form. He died of a heart attack at age 72 in Stockholm, Sweden. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
