My guess is that since he died Dec 22, 1919, by the time the stone was ordered, set, and engraved, it was mistakenly engraved with the "current year" of 1920.]

OLD SOLDIERS WHO HAVE LIVED IN O'BRIEN COUNTY, IOWA
Compiled by Geo W. Schee and O.H. Montzheimer
1909, Primghar, Iowa
Prepared for the Internet by Don Harrington
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Book, "Old Soldiers Who Have lived in O'Brien County, Iowa" was published in 1909.
Mr. Montzheimer did most of the work and Mr Schee furnished most of the funds for publication, printing and postage. It appears that the book was not sold, but a copy was furnished free to each veteran's family. The information on these approximately 500 veterans provide much information on their families in addition to providing their military records. I wish to thank Colleen Boose for making a copy of the book available to me so that it could be placed on the O'Brien website.

"Solomon Baker Dead
Solomon Baker was one of the early settlers of Warren and lived here many years. Some ten or twelve years ago he removed to Highmore, South Dakota, where he invested in land at a low price, holding several hundred acres at the time of his death. His daughter, Mrs. Ida Baker Fields, sending a copy of the Highmore Herald for Jan. 18, 1912, which contains the following announcement:
SOLOMON BAKER DEAD
Solomon Baker died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. C. Fields, north of town, on Saturday afternoon. Deceased was 86 years, and up to the last hour he enjoyed good health. He was taken with a sinking spell Saturday, from which he never rallied.
The funeral services, conducted by Rev. McDonald, were held at the Fields home Tuesday afternoon and the remains were brought to Highmore Wednesday and laid to rest in the Highmore cemetery. Quite a member of old soldiers and here joined the procession as it passed through town."

They settled at Calumet, Iowa, where he owned a general store and then moved to Sutherland, and in 1901 they moved to Highmore, S. Dak. where he died on Jan. 21, 1920, without issue. 1916: Obituary of Granddaughter: [Note: Frankie was the daughter of Frank Viers and Mary Lucinda Fields. She died from typhoid fever. The year on her stone is wrong and the obituary date is correct.]

STORM LAKE BUENA VISTA VIDETTE - Fri, Jan 21, 1916 - Many friends in this city were very sorry to learn last Friday afternoon of the death of Frankie Viers, daughter of Mrs Frank Viers, which occurred at her home that day. The little girl had been critically ill for 2 weeks with typh[o]id fever and all that medial aid and loving hands could do was of no avail and death came as a relief at the time stated. Her death is doubly sad, as her mother has been seriously ill and her sister is also quite ill.

Frankie Marie Viers was born Oct 22, 1905 being 11 years, 2 months, and 20 days old at the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her loss her mother, and two sisters: Goldie and Dolores.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon and interment was made in the Storm Lake cemetery beside her father who died only a few weeks ago.

Those present from out of town at the funeral were: Mrs and Mrs Walter Hall of Adair, OK; D.C. Fields and Mrs John Lane of Highland, SD; and Mrs William Albright of Fort Dodge.

There she made her home till a short time before her death. She was a life long member of the Methodist church, to which she was very faithful as long as her health permitted. She loved to do things for those who needed help.
She was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps, both in Iowa and South Dakota. For several years she was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Highmore. Always ready to do her share at any time.

On 18 Feb 1864, DeWitt enlisted in Company I, Iowa 21st Infantry Regiment. He mustered out on 12 July 1865 and transferred to Company U, Iowa 34th Infantry Regiment on the same day. He mustered out of the 34th Regiment on 15 Aug 1865 at Houston, Texas.

"Solomon Baker Dead
Solomon Baker was one of the early settlers of Warren and lived here many years.

From 1929 on she lived with relatives and friends. On Dec. 30, 1942, she entered the State Soldier's Home at Hot Springs, S. D. She had this privilege, being a civil war veteran's wife.
