In the 1920 U.S. Census, James A. Cookson, 68, born Canada, father born Maine, mother born Canada, was living in Washington County, Maine, Hattie A., 65, born Maine, parents born Maine; widowed daughter (sic) Gertrude Cookson, 34, born Maine, father born Maine, mother born Mass.; grandchildren Albert John Cookson, 12; Wellington Cookson, 10; Henry E. Cookson, 9; Evelyn, 8; and Edna, 5, father born Maine., mother born Mass, all born in Maine.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, lumber mill sawyer James A. Sawyer, 44, born July 1855 in Canada, parents born Canada, was living on Baring Street, Calais, Maine with Hattie A., 40, born Feb. 1860 in Maine, parents born Maine; day laborer Charles E., 25, born March 1876; Nellie M., 21, born July 1878; Effie E., 20, born April 1880; cotton mill carder Etta H., 14,born December 1885; William, 12, born October 1888; Emma H., 9, born August 1890; Ethel, 7, born April, 1893; and Lynnwood, 4, born March 1896, all born in Maine.
The Cooksons had been married for 26 years. Eight of their 14 children were still living.
James had come to the U.S. in 1870.

In the 1880 U.S. Census, lumber mill worker Albert Cookson, 27, born Canada, parents born Canada, was living in Calais, Maine, with Hattie A., 25, born Maine, parents born Maine; Charles E., 6; Nettie A., 4; Nellie M., 1; and Effie Ella, one month, all born in Maine; and widowed aunt Susan Hillman, 66, born Canada, parents born Canada.

James was the son of Sarah Greenlaw her second husband William Cookson and was born in Chamcook. Sarah's first husband was Samuel Cortnay and her third was Harris Hatch.
