Jacob married Mary Elizabeth Perry April 09, 1884 in Knox Co, Tennessee. They were the parents of three daughters,
Etta Emaline Bales Lyke, Mary L. Bales Williams, and Elizabeth L. "Lizzie" Bales.
Jacob was a widower by 1900 and raised his three daughters alone, he never remarried.
Daughter Mary L."Mollie" Bales Williams two children came to live with their grandfather before 1920 , Ruth Mae and Charles F. Williams .
By 1920 the entire family were living with Andrew "Andy" and Etta Bales Lyke with their two young daughters Myrtle and Grayce.
Andy was a moulder at a plow shop, Jake was a laborer at the same shop and Jake's daughter Elizabeth worked at a candy factory.They were residing on Catalpa Ave in Knoxville.
In 1930 Jake, his daughter Elizabeth and grandson Charles F. Williams were living at 4327 Alma Street in Knoxville. Jake's daughter Etta and her family were living next door, her husband Andy Lyke owned his own carpenter business at the time.
Jacob was the youngest child of Stephen Bales and Sarah Collet of Greene Co. Jacob's mother Sarah died before 1900 and he cared for his father Stephen until his death in Knoxville between 1900 and 1910. Two of Jake's brothers, George Bales
and Isaac Bales died in the Civil War just five days apart.
