Ben Ali, as he was known, was the son of James Ben Ali Haggin, Jr. and Lee Wood. He first married Margaret Faith Robinson in New York in 1903. In 1916, he married Helen Roche, a New York actress who used the stage name of Bonnie Glass.

Ben Ali was a portrait painter, mostly of New York's women of society and thoroughbred horses, and a stage designer.

He was the grandson of James Ben Ali Haggin, a native of Mercer County, Kentucky, who was a famous horse breeder and businessman who become one of the country's first multi-millionaires.

His great great-grandfather was Captain John Haggin, a Revolutionary War Soldier and one of the earliest settlers of the state of Kentucky.
Haggin was a seat designer and portrait painter. He designed the tableaux that were features in the Ziegfeld Follies for three seasons and produced sets for the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
