POQUOSON - Elwood L. "Buster" Martin Sr., born April 6, 1933, was a native and lifelong resident of Poquoson, who loved the water and his boat, Spellbound, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict; worked as a shipfitter in the Newport News Shipyard; and retired from civil service in 1975, as a machinist in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. During his civil service, Buster received a monetary award for a suggestion that saved government funds. Buster was a member and Past Master of Poquoson Masonic Lodge No. 49, which he loved dearly; a member of the Newport News Scottish Rite; a member of Odd Fellows East End Lodge No. 247 of Hampton; and a member of American Legion Post No. 273 in Poquoson.
Buster was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Inez Martin; his sister, Nan Evans; and a baby sister, who passed shortly after birth.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years who he loved dearly, Sandra Greenwood Martin; one daughter, Dorothy "Dottie" Martin; one son, Buster "Bubba" Martin and wife, Shirley Long; four grandchildren, Sandra Marie Martin and fiancE, Gil Patrocinio, Jacob Martin and fiancEe, Liz Scaggs of Hampton, Jennifer Klochak and husband, Joshua of Hayes, and Jessica Martin of Langley AFB; three great-grandchildren, Marissa Inez Martin, Natalie Jean Klochak, and Nathaniel Klochak; aunts, Lucille Miskell Gordon, Evelyn Martin; uncle, Nelson Martin of Norfolk; niece, Nancy Jean Goodson and husband, Sonny of Hampton; nephew, Allen Evans and wife, Kathy of Texas.
During his illness, Buster continued to say, "I love my family." He also loved his two poodles, Duke and Brutus, who spent every day with him in his chair watching Westerns. He will now run in Heaven with his dog, Buddy, who was so dedicated to Buster.
Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, with Masonic Rites.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Gran will be greatly missed by his family.
