Salt Lake Tribune, The (UT) - November 1, 1998

Deceased Name: Emil Carl Ottesen

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, age 94, passed peacefully away with his loved ones at his side at the Salt Lake Home on Friday, October 30, 1998.

Originally named Carl Emil Christian Ottesen, he was born in Uppsala, Sweden, February 11, 1904, to Danish father, Jens Peder Christian Ottesen, and Swedish mother, Elin Charlotta Aker (Oker). Immigrated to America in 1913 at age nine, with his mother and his mother's mother, Emma Charlotta Bergman Aker (Oker). Resided first in Pleasant Grove and later moved to Salt Lake City. He was married January 18, 1935, to Mildred Billings in the Salt Lake Temple.

Emil never forgot his native tongue, speaking Swedish fluently, and yet he spoke English without any hint of an accent. He had a great love and appreciation for music, especially Swedish music. He loved to dance Swedish dances and was always reciting or singing Swedish ditties. He had a strong baritone voice and having taken voice lessons. He spent much of his time singing in choruses, quartets, duets, and church choirs. He was a former member of the now-obsolete Gustav Adolph Male Chorus.

In 1942, Emil began work in the LDS Hospital laundry department. In a news item in the employee newsletter "The Stethoscoope" a Blue Ribbon article in 1962 indicated that "Emil has been a trustworthy and loyal employee; has always been prompt on the job and in 20 years of employment has used only four days of sick leave." He retired in 1971 with only about one week of sick leave having been used.

Emil loved family history work and Swedish genealogical research. After retirement he worked for many years as a part-time volunteer missionary in the Family History Department.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, and their three children: David C. (Fay Morse), nine children and nine grandchildren; Mary Ellen Olsen (Melvin), four children and 10 grandchildren; Richard B. (Sandra Rogers), four children and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 3, 1998 at 12 noon at the Princeton Ward, 1078 South McClelland (East). Friends may call at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 South 200 East, Salt Lake City on Monday November 2, 1998 from 6 to 8 p.m. also at the Ward on Tuesday from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Burial will follow at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Ave & N Street.
