The Civil War came along and William C. W. Ross joined the Confederate Army on 30 July 1861, enlisting at Linden, AL in the 11th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. Less than a year later (27 Jun 1862) as part of the 4th Brigade, Longstreet's Division, he was wounded at Gaines Mill, VA, and was erroneously reported killed. In May of the following year he was again hit, receiving a gunshot wound to the right leg, and was treated at Chimborazo Hospital No. 4 in Richmond, VA. This time his wound disqualified him for further action, so he was detailed by order of General Robert E. Lee, 18 Jul 1863, as a watchman at the Confederate Powder Works, Augusta, GA.
