From a book about the origins of Russellville, AR:
The Alex Maddox family, who were one of the group from Illinois, pitched their tent in the Russell yard until they could get them a house built. Soon other settlers began to build, and by 1836 Coke Darnell, Dan Petray, and Madison Shinn all had homes here. Some years later Coke Darnell had a tavern where the Central Presbyterian church now stands.
Upon moving to CA, Coke pursued mining, but soon resumed his former occupation of farming in Calaveras County.
Free and accepted mason.
Spelling of last name on his headstone is Darnul. There is also an Arkansas land record with the same spelling. The same record seems to exist in the U.S. General Land Office Records, 1796-1907. Other records show Darnell, Darneal, Darnall, and other variations.
