Opera Singer. A lyric tenor who matured into heavier roles, he shall be remembered primarily for his career at the Bavarian State Opera (BSO). Raised in Bavaria he was 'discovered' by his friend Richard Strauss and after study in Frankfurt and Berlin joined the Berlin Volksoper in the late 1930s. A member of the BSO from 1942 on he was the Italian Singer for the October 28, 1942, Munich world premiere of Strauss' "Capriccio". Over time he was to assume most of Strauss' tenor roles and many of Wagner's and was a respected exponent of the tenor portion of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Klarwein sang at the Salzburg Festival as well as at the principal venues of Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, Brussels, London, and elsewhere. On August 11, 1957, he appeared in the Munich world premiere of Paul Hindemith's "The Harmony of the World" and in 1961 partnered with his wife Sari Barabas in a much praised Passau presentation of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana". He retired in 1977 and lived out his days in Munich; his voice is documented on a number of recordings.
