Pauline Klenk was born in Germany on August 23, 1864. She lived in Garb, Wurttemberg, Germany, a very small village about 10 miles north of Murrhardt.
Pauline was about 18 years old when she came to the United States from Germany. She taught herself to read and write English. She worked taking care of children. Pauline had a sister, Catherine Klenk, who also came to the United States.
While working in Detroit, Pauline heard of a German settlement in the area of Brutus, (Emmet County) Michigan. She moved there and met Karl Kugler. They were married on October 5, 1885 in Petoskey, (Emmet County) Michigan. Pauline and Karl had 11 children, all born at home on their farm in Maple River Township (Emmet County) Michigan.
After Karl died, Pauline eventually left the farm in the early to middle 1930's, and went to live with her youngest daughter, Ann, in Pontiac, (Oakland County) Michigan. She lived with Ann until she died on January 7, 1961, of a cerebral vascular accident. Pauline was 96 years old when she died. She is buried next to her husband, Karl, in the Maple River Township Cemetery, in Michigan, along with several of their children.
