He was a holder of the following awards: Iron Cross First and Second class, Honor Cup of the Luftwaffe, German Cross in Gold, and the Knights Cross. He had 36 confirmed "kills", 1 on the Western Front, 12 on the Eastern Front, and the rest in Africa. He was killed in an accident at the Castel-Benito Aerodrome, near Tripoli, when his aircraft, a Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4, Works No. 10 278, marked as Black 1, hit a sand dune on takeoff.
