He was the son of James Robison and Margaret Adams.

He married Cornelia Guinal on 1 Jan 1794 in Fort Plain, Montgomery, New York

The Robison's were Methodists and resided in Scoharie county where he lost his farm by endorsing notes for other people. In 1816 he removed to Tunkhannock, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, where he located and cleared a farm. In 1827 he sold this farm, which was one of the best in the country and removed to Clay, Onondaga, New York.

After the death of his wife, he followed the occupation of peddler and made his home with various children.

Joseph died 9 June 1839 in Palermo, Oswego, New York.

In 2008 over 16,000 descendants of Joseph and Cornelia have been identified.

Joseph and Cornelia settled in Charleston and began their family, which ultimately consisted of twelve children, five boys and seven girls. A son, John, was born in Charleston on 17 November 1796. A daughter, Jane, was born 28 March 1799, but she died on 18 March 1800, before her first birthday. Another son, James Miller, was born 24 November 1800. William Henry was born 6 July 1802 in Charleston. Another brother, Joseph's fourth son, Joseph, Jr., was born 21 May 1804. There followed four sisters born in Charleston. They were Lavina (also written Lovina), born 26 December 1806, Mary born about 1808, Matilda born 11 March 1811 and Susan born 7 October 1813.

About two years after arriving in Tunkhannock, twins, Delilah and Peter were born, on 27 April 1817. Joseph and Cornelia's seventh child, daughter Mary, died in about 1818 (very uncertain), and their twelfth and last child, Margaret, was born 13 May 1819 at Tunkhannock.

Joseph Robison, Sr. died 9 June 1839 at Palermo, Oswego, New York. At the time of his death he had nine living children, five boys (four of them married), and four girls (all of whom were married). Also he had twenty-six living grandchildren, eighteen boys and eight girls ranging in age from six weeks to fourteen years.
