Franklin was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1849. He attended school there and helped his father on the farm. He moved with his family about 1964 to Carroll County, Illinois. He married Harriet Conn on 16 October 1870 in Fairhaven. He obtained land and farmed in that area and five children were born there, George Elmer(1872-?), Burton Delbert(1875-1944), Alice Tina(1876-1946), Etta Annice(1878-1960), Clayton Earl(1881-1960).
Franklin Imel died in 1883. A family story from Etta Annice Imel says that he died after being kicked by a horse. Harriet (pregnant at the time) and the family moved to Nebraska with Franklin's parents, where Frances (Frankie) Mae Imel (1884-1968) was born on 12 March 1884 at Holdredge, Phelps County, Nebraska.
