Professional Football Player. For twelve seasons (1970 to 1981), he played at the center, guard and tackle positions in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Rams. Born an identical twin, his brother Ron also became an accomplished NFL player, in addition to their older sibling Bill Saul who played professionally in the NFL, Rich attended Butler High School (Pennsylvania). Along with Ron, he played collegiate football at Michigan State University and distinguished himself receiving All-Conference honors at the linebacker and end positions. In 1969 along with Ron, Rich received Academic All-American status. Selected by the Rams during the 8th round of the 1970 NFL Draft, he appeared in 176 regular season games and after his conversion to center, he established himself as one of the league's top players at that position, earning Pro-Bowl recognition for six consecutive years (1976 to 1981). He was a contributor to seven consecutive division title winners and experienced playing in a Super Bowl (XIV), when the Rams played Pittsburgh in January 1980. Following his football career, he worked in the real estate and title insurance industry. He died after a lengthy battle with leukemia. (bio by: C.S.)
