Basil Prather was born to Aaron Allen Prather and wife Jane (a cousin) on 20 October 1742, in Prince George's County, Maryland. Paternal grandparents are documented as Thomas McKay Prather and Martha Sprigg. Maternal grandparents are believed to be Jonathan Prather and Elizabeth Biggers.
Basil grew up in a large family, with a twin named Baruch, and ten other siblings. Earlier church records for this family are found in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Land records indicate that the family moved to Frederick County, Maryland, by 1761, and later to Montgomery County, Maryland. A cemetery that holds many of Basil's family members in unmarked or unidentified graves is located on the property of the Prather homestead in Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland. It is probable that his parents are buried there.
About 1765, Basil married Clorenda Robertson, and together they had fourteen children. The family relocated to Pennsylvania sometime prior to the Revolutionary War, as Basil appears on the war rolls serving as a Captain and Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Continental Troops.
In 1781, Basil received a land grant in Jefferson County, Kentucky, apparently contemplating a move near his twin brother Baruch, who received a grant in Bourbon County and later settled near Lexington. However, it is unclear whether Basil and his family actually relocated to Kentucky. (Documentation regarding the location of Basil during this period would be appreciated.) In 1790, the family is found on records residing in Iredell, North Carolina. By 1810, they moved a final time, to Clark County, Indiana.
