Fanny's father died while still in the service at the close of the Civil War when she was about four years old. She she was raised by her mother and step-father, Caleb Ball who died in 1881. She lived with her mother with the support of her late father's Civil War pension and appears to have worked as a seamstress. Her final illness was aggravated by an accident in which she was struck by an automobile which fractured both of her legs. At least one census record and her death certificate list her as a widow--but this is probably incorrect as she maintained her name McDonald all of her life.
